Orbital complications of acute sinusitis

Objectives: We investigated on morbidity and mortality orbital complication of acute sinusitis. Patients and Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 25 patients (13 male, 12 female; mean age 21 years; range 2-56 years) treated for the orbital complication of acute sinusitis have been evaluated. The symptoms physical findings, progress of the patients are investigated through the hospital reports. Cases are evaluated according to age, sex, etiologic factors, localization, treatment, morbidty and morbidty. Results: Periorbital cellulitis in 20 patients (80%), orbital cellulitis in 2 patients (8%) and subperiostal abcess 3 patients (12%) have been reported. In 5 of 9 cases diagnosed an orbital complication who are above the 16 years, history of surgery and trauma were present. All the patients diagnosed as orbital complication received high dose intravenous antibiotic therapy. Three cases diagnosed as subperiostal abcess and 2 cases diagnosed as orbital cellulitis have been treated using endoscopic surgery. Two patients were observed to have recurrence of orbital complication. There was no mortality and blindness during the treatment of orbital complication of the acute sinusitis. Diplopy persisted only in 2 cases. Conclusion: Orbital complications frequently in adult patients have been related with trauma. The patients with orbital complications should be treated with aggressive parenteral antibiotics. Surgical treatment is indicated when subperiosteal orbital abcess, orbital cellulitis and orbital abcess are seens.
